How To Stamp Concrete – How to Make Concrete Stamps
To stamp concrete is easy. If you can read or watch a video you can stamp concrete. Concrete stamping is basically impressing fresh concrete with a molded latex mat. The concrete stamps are most commonly an impression of stone or brick, but nowadays there are wood impression concrete stamps, tile impression concrete stamps, pebbles impression concrete stamps, cobble stones impression concrete stamps, slate impression concrete stamps, and ashler stone bond impression concrete stamps.
There are even concrete stamping rollers available now. A concrete stamping roller is just like a repeating pattern paint roller.
By applying pressure and rolling a cylindrical tube across the surface of fresh concrete the concrete is impressed with the roller and receives a surface similar to a negative of the roller impression. It is very quick but limited in its uses since it has such a frequent concrete pattern repetition.
A brief description of the work and information needed to stamp concrete is readily available on the Internet. Once the concrete is poured, flattened and floated releasing agents and coloring powders are broadcast across the surface of the concrete so the concrete stamps don’t stick to the fresh concrete. Then the concrete stamps are pounded into the surface of the concrete using hand tampers.
By placing one concrete stamp next to another in the same stamping pattern, a concrete finisher simply hop scotches the concrete stamps across the concrete surface until the entire surface has been stamped and receives the impression of the concrete stamps.
The Real Work and Information Needed To Stamp Concrete
Is in the set up of the concrete job. Here is where things get a bit tricky and are too complex to explain in a few pages – and why I have written and programmed the Multitorial: Groovy Concrete there are elevations to establish in order to get the concrete to drain and not hold water on the surface. There are concrete forms to set. There is an excavating and soil preparation process. There is concrete reinforcement that needs to be installed before the concrete is poured or put into place. The concrete needs to be estimated. The concrete needs to be mixed – or ordered in a truck. The concrete needs to be placed into the concrete forms. The concrete must be integrated with the reinforcement. The concrete needs to be screeded and flattened. The concrete must be edged and floated with either wood or magnesium concrete floats. The concrete should be flattened with a tool called a concrete fresno.
If the surface of the concrete is not flat and creamy – in other words no rocks or sandy texture on the surface of the concrete – the concrete stamps can not do their job of impressing the concrete.
Concrete stamping is not rocket science and you can easily learn to stamp your own concrete, but you must get the concrete surface and project ready to be stamped or you will be wasting your time, money and creating a huge head ache by having either an ugly slab or having to tear out tons of concrete because it devaluate the value of your home instead of adding value because of the rich beauty of stamped concrete.
The reason stamped concrete is so popular is it can be done for about half the price of the real surface it is faux representation there of. The cost of stamped concrete is less than half the price of a good stone job. Stamped concrete will cost about one third the price of brick paving and stamped concrete is one quarter the price of ashler stone bond! But stamped concrete is worthless if it isn’t impressed properly and you cannot stamp concrete properly if you don’t get the surface prepared correctly before stamping the concrete.
Making Concrete Stamps Is Easy
Spreading multiple layers of latex over a desirable surface is how the concrete stamps (called “mats”) are made. Or polyurethane rubber is used. A releasing agent is used so the latex comes off clean and gives a reasonable facsimile of the original surface.
Once the rubber dries for about 72 hours you are in business and you have your own concrete stamps. Now all you need is Groovy Concrete which will teach you how to stamp concrete. Groovy Concrete comes complete with calculators and a video of concrete stamping and flat stamping. With Groovy Concrete you will learn how to pour concrete, set concrete forms, float concrete, finish concrete and stamp concrete. You will also learn how to do exposed aggregate concrete, simulated tiled concrete and even pool decking!
